Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the culture and history of those with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
The monthlong event begins on September 15th, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
In 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15th and ending on October 15th.
